We have been working on an Italian BESS pipeline in excess of 1GW and the Maddaloni project is the first to achieve Ready-to-build status
A grid connection from Terna was secured in June 2018 and the project was called up to the Regione by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security after the Conferenzi di Servizi was issued. It was approved by the Regione Campania on the 31st January, chaired by the leader of the Regione, President de Luca.
The ministerial decree confirming the approval was issued on Thursday 8th June. Construction is anticipated to start in 2025.
Once operational, the 200MW system will provide enough electricity to power over 35,000 homes at times of peak demand and provide real time balancing of the electricity grid as more renewable energy generators come online.
The project has been supported by Legance and 3eingegneria.
Peter Sermon, Aura Power’s Global Head of Development said “We are delighted to have received consent to build this project, which will bring a number of economic benefits to the local area as well as helping the Region and Italy in its efforts to decarbonise the electricity network. We would like to thank the Municipality for their continued support and cooperation and look forward to seeing the completion of this project”.
Cristina Martorana, Partner, Legance said: “I still remember when Aura Power called me 5 years ago asking for legal support in the BESS field of law for this pioneer project. At that time, the legal framework was completely missing. Now the Maddaloni project is a reality thanks to the forward-looking approach of Aura Power, their resilience and the great cooperation and professionalism shown by all the competent authorities involved in the authorization procedure. Thanks also to the Maddaloni project, Legance can claim a unique expertise and knowledge in the relevant market”.
According to figures from the national renewables association, ANIE Rinnovabili, by the end of September 2022, Italy had a combined capacity of 959 MW and a maximum storage capacity of 1,826 MWh. The Maddaloni project will add around 20% to the current combined capacity once built. The majority of existing battery systems in Italy are connected to a photovoltaic plant, so this will be one of the first stand-alone battery projects connecting directly to the electricity network.
Italy has commendable plans to bring renewables’ share of final gross electricity production to 73% by 2030 and 95-100% by 2050. The International Trade Association has said ‘to integrate new renewable power, it will also be necessary to install at least 60 GW of new, large-sized reserves, in addition to strengthening electric networks’. Energy storage solutions like batteries can help deliver this.
Aura Power has over 20GW of solar and battery energy storage projects in development across Europe and North America.
