Aura Power closes 26MWp solar farm deal with Montana First Nation

We have recently divested one of our Canada solar farm projects to the indigenous community, Montana First Nation.

The 26MWp development is located around 12 km west of Killarney Lake in central Alberta within the Municipal District of Wainwright No.61. The electricity generated from the solar farm will provide enough energy to power around 2,500 typical homes.

We entered a Joint Venture partnership with the First Nations community in early 2022 and began development on the project in 2017, securing AUC Facility Approval in 2021.

Aura Power developed the project from origination through to Ready to Build. Montana First Nation was supported by Ascent Energy Partners in the transaction process.

Aura Power Renewables Ltd, are well established in Alberta having developed the 46MWp Empress Solar Park, now owned by ATCO, the 88MWp Fox Coulee Solar Park now owned by Neoen, and a 26MWp solar park divested to another indigenous community last year.

Victor Beda, Aura Power Country Manager said, “The world is making extraordinary progress on building a clean new world for future generations. The energy transition is happening much faster and much more deliberately than anyone anticipated. This project is an important step towards that goal, one we can achieve together as a community. We are working to deliver a number of other projects to support Alberta’s energy transition and are excited about the positive impact they can have.”

Aura Power is working on a further development pipeline of around 1GW in Alberta, which also includes battery storage systems to provide crucial balancing services to the grid as more renewable generators come online. Their pipeline includes the 276MWp Peace Butte solar project in Cypress County which recently had all objections removed to progress with obtaining a construction permit.

Canada is part of the 118 countries who pledged to triple the world’s renewable energy capacity by 2030 at last year's COP28 climate summit, as a route to cut the share of fossil fuels in the world’s energy production and reduce carbon emissions. Utility-scale solar power is currently the cheapest form of energy generation which offers significant opportunities for the energy transition both economically and environmentally.
